Earlier this week I had a day off and invited a friend to go to the movies with me. I used to be an avid movie goer in ‘another life’ but that ceased several years ago. In the past few years, I have gone very infrequently…maybe once or twice a year, or some years, not at all. Nowadays, I see most movies at home on TV, once they are out of the movie theatre. However, so far this year, I have been to the movies on 4 occasions which is a lot for me. I seemed to have been bitten by the movie bug once again…to some extent. This week I decided to see Mission: Impossible – Fallout. The last Mission Impossible movie I saw in the movie theatre was Mission Impossible 3, which was some time ago. The rest of the movies in the franchise, I watched on television.
Whatever the reason, I decided a couple of weeks ago, that when the latest movie…Mission Impossible: – Fallout was released; I was going to see it in the movie theatre. I saw a lot of the press on the film, including that Tom Cruise had been injured during the filming, and it just seemed like it was time to head back to the big screen and watch a ‘real action flick.’ As a very young woman, I remember one of my family members was really crazy about Tom Cruise. Me…I knew he was talented and attractive, but I watched his movies purely for the entertainment. I enjoy action movies. I respected the fact he put his all into every project he did and usually did it very well, which involved doing his own stunts.

So…earlier this week, I got on the train and headed downtown to meet up with my friend for a matinée. We made a day of it – had lunch and afterwards sat in the nearby square and people-watched, then headed to the movie theatre as the time drew near. It was a beautiful sunny day out and all seemed right with the world. It’s amazing how weather and good company can affect your mood. I always enjoyed going to the movies on a weekday for a matinée. It’s something I did frequently in the old days, before life became hectic. Something about that experience is very calming and uplifting and is reminiscent of playing hooky. You leave behind the crowded, sunshine-filled, busy streets of the city on a typical workday; and go into a theatre in the middle of the day. At once, as soon as you are seated in the dimly lit theatre; you feel like you can forget your troubles – at least for a couple of hours. In this movie’s case, almost 2 hours and 30 minutes. I think that’s what good movies are supposed to do – ‘transport’ you to another place and time.
If you are reading this, you probably already saw a Mission Impossible movie or know of the franchise. The lead character in the film is Ethan Hunt, played brilliantly by Tom Cruise. You aren’t going to find any in-depth plot analysis on this post. To the movie itself…it was 2 hours and 28 minutes of jam-packed action from beginning to end. If you want to see a bona fide action movie with a good plot and great stunts, look no further. I found myself being startled (in an exhilarating way) by the sound effects reverberating through the surround sound.
I find nowadays, I really have to like an actor to go pay good money and watch their film in the movie theatre. Especially since I no longer go to many movies as I have pointed out earlier. As we walked along the street earlier, on our way to the theatre, my friend asked me….”Why Mission Impossible?” I replied without hesitation…”I like Tom Cruise.” My friend responded…”He’s very private, isn’t he?” I replied….”I don’t care about his personal life and other people’s opinion of him. He seems to be a good guy.” My quick response even surprised me a bit. But; it made me realize that indeed….I prefer to see movies starring actors I like and have some respect for. I also realized Tom Cruise has been in the public eye for most of my adult life. He is a genuine movie star. It’s nice to have some constancy in life….it’s somewhat reassuring and nostalgic.
In a nutshell – Mission: Impossible – Fallout, was a fantastic movie. Well acted, (stellar cast) lots of action, interesting, exciting, and above all, entertaining. The scenery was breathtaking…the movie took you on a wild ride across the world. It delivers everything you expect from a summer blockbuster. It got a thumbs up, from both my friend and myself. We were amazed at how fast the time flew by and we were enthralled throughout the entire film. So, this post was not necessarily meant to be a movie review, but in my own unorthodox, meandering way, I guess it turned out to be. (sort of)
