LIVING IN THE MOMENT

“Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift of God, which is why we call it the present.”
― Bil Keane

As we get closer to the end of the first week in this new year, the thought occurred to me; I hope to try to leave my mistakes in the past, once and for all. This is not a new year’s resolution. I gave up on making those a long time ago. At the same time, subconsciously I think we are inclined to reflect on our lives at the start of each year. So, essentially, we sometimes inadvertently make a resolution, without actually calling it a resolution. An ongoing struggle of mine is that I have a tendency to dwell on things I wish I had done differently in my life. As if reliving them could change the past, and somehow alter the present. I hope to find forgiveness in my heart for myself, for my ‘perceived mistakes.’ It is easier said than done. I refer to ‘mistakes’ such as …if I had done ‘A’ instead of ‘B’, I would have had a better outcome. Or trying harder and doing more in other circumstances. Then I came across these gems of quotes, which sums up this topic so perfectly.

to be happy, you must...

I thought of the above quotes and wondered why some of us beat up ourselves over things that are gone and can never be changed. There are enough issues to deal with in the present, without compounding the situation by dwelling on the past. This inevitably  leads to stress and sadness. If you are also a worrier, (which I sometimes am), that means you are never truly 100% in the here and now. I admire people who can keep their feet firmly planted in the present. live in the present 3ekhart toll

Eventually, I hope to stop second-guessing some of my past decisions, especially when I encounter difficulties, and accept this is the place, and moment where I was meant to be. Instead of constantly thinking, I somehow could have allowed myself a smoother journey by choosing to do ‘X’ instead of ‘Z.’ I wish to live fully in the present, put more trust in God and accept that in his infinite wisdom, he knows best.
