I watch all that is happening in the world today, and at rapid pace and I am heartbroken. How can you not be, if you have one degree of empathy and compassion in your body? I have tried to not dwell on unhappiness and misery, but the events of the past week or so, plus the ongoing Coronavirus crisis simply cannot be ignored. If you can turn your eyes and heart away from all this suffering, well….I have no words. For myself, I am a very empathetic person and really believe, that as human beings, we are all connected. What you may think will not affect you, eventually will, left unchecked. That’s why we all have to work together, to make this world we inhabit a better place.

You may say….“oh, that’s over there, it has nothing to do with me.” Even if you do not see the suffering personally or live it, it is still suffering and eventually it affects us all. Turning your eyes away doesn’t mean….it goes away. So, you may say….what can I do? I think the time has come for the world to engage with each other on a more compassionate and respectful basis. Stop assuming another human being is so different from you, based on their geographical location. Can you imagine a world where we all look alike, think alike, and believe the exact same things? How boring and uninteresting that would be.
I think we all have to realize that we are living in dangerous times. And, no, I am not going to tell you next….the world is coming to an end. Nevertheless; the world is changing. It is changing so quickly, that sometimes we just cannot see the frantic pace. Things are happening simultaneously….look at the awful earthquake in Haiti and the fall of Afghanistan. At the end of 2019, could any of us have envisioned that throughout 2020, we would be dealing with something called Covid-19? Now, in the latter part of 2021, we are still dealing with this deadly virus and an end doesn’t seem clear. Yes, we are indeed living in troubling times and as much as we would like for life to go back to how it was, sadly, I don’t think that is on the near horizon. So, in closing, what can we really do? I think light extinguishes darkness. Put as much light as you can into this world. Help someone, be kind, do not look at life, as me versus them. Spread love, have empathy and compassion. Lift each other up. If we all do this, then we can defeat the darkness.
